This species is common along the Arabian Gulf coast, the northern Hajar Mountains, the Ru'us al-Jibal, and is also found on offshore islands (Jongbloed et al. 2003). It occurs from sea level to at least 1,900 m asl (Feulner 2011). The global distribution of this species is across northern Africa, restricted in southern Europe (Sicily and Crete), through the Arabian Peninsula, to western India (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019).

Helianthemum lipii is found on sand, gravel plains and silt, in addition to on plateaux in the Ru'us al Jibal (Jongbloed et al. 2003, MEW 2010, Feulner 2011). It is a perennial, woody dwarf-shrub, reaching up to 0.3 m in height, and flowering between February to April (Jongbloed et al. 2003).

This species is widespread in northern parts of the UAE. Whilst subpopulations will have undergone a significant decline as a result of coastal development, it is thought that the species still qualifies as Least Concern.
