Redlist Notes

Qualifier(s): Conservation Dependent, Human Induced; Note(s): Populations: Figure-of-eight (no observed interchange with other colonies during breeding season) 87 pups produced in 2003/04; northern Auckland islands 2428 pups produced in 2003/04; Campbell Island 358 pups produced in 2002/03. Otago not considered a separate breeding population because founder female tagged on Auckland Island, still breeding and population still extremely small (4 breeding females). Northern Auckland Island colonies are considered a single population because of substantial male interchange and some female interchange. Total population of appro 7,000 mature individuals is extremely low for an otariid. Low diversity of mitochondrial haplotypes and MHC variation. Stable qualifier removed because of recent reduced pup productivity and increased pup mortality (epizootics).
