It is widespread within the Hajar Mountains and Ru'us al-Jibal (Jongbloed et al. 2003). This species prefers low to medium elevations, from around 400 m to 1600 m (Jongbloed et al. 2003). Globally, this species is known from the Arabian Peninsula to India (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019).

This species is a perennial herb (Jongbloed et al. 2003, Fawzi and Ksiksi 2012). It has a woody base and stems and produces small white flowers between February and May (Jongbloed et al. 2003). Generally, Plocama hymenostephana grows on hillsides and wadi banks within montane habitats (Jongbloed et al. 2003), in addition to gravel plains (MEW 2010).

It is suggested to be occasional, however, it is also documented from protected areas such as the Wadi Wurayah National Park and was previously assessed as Least Concern.
