Species
Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
This species is widespread through the Hajar Mountains in the eastern UAE, with additional records from Jebel Hafeet (Jongbloed et al. 2003), north to R'as al-Khaimah, where it is found on the alluvial plain (Western 1983). The species occurs within the 'Olive Highlands' of the southern Hajar Mountains (Feulner 2014), within Wadi Wurayah National Park (WWNP; Judas 2016), and occurs throughout the UAE part of the Ru'us al-Jibal to at least 1,600 m (Feulner 2011). The global range of this species is around much of the southern Mediterranean basin to the north-east and east of Africa, through the Arabian Peninsula to Iran and Pakistan (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019). The species has been widely introduced and naturalised.

Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
This species is known from few records in the UAE. Jongbloed et al. (2003) cite two records by R.A. Western from coastal areas of Ajman and Umm al Quwain (<a href=""http://data.rbge.org.uk/herb/E00043043"">RBGE Herbarium</a>; R.A. Western; 1985, ""Umm al Quwain to Moola Road""). <a href=""http://data.rbge.org.uk/herb/E00043042"">RBGE</a> also hold a specimen (K. Müller-Hohenstein 1986) from dunes near Al Awir (Dubai). G. Brown (pers. comm. 2019) has only seen the species once in the UAE, near coastal sandsheets in Umm Al Quwain. R.A Western collected the species from ""Ruus al Jibal summit"" in 1985 (Western 1985), precise locality not known and possibly not within the UAE. The estimated EOO of this species is 2340 km2 and it is considered to occur at fewer then 10 threat-based locations. The global range of this species is through the Arabian Peninsula to Egypt and the eastern Mediterranean (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019).

Assessment rationale/justification
This species has a relatively restricted range, with an estimated EOO of 2340 km2. Due to coastal development and grazing from nearby camel farms, it is inferred to be experiencing an ongoing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat. In addition, it is estimated to occur at fewer than 10 locations. Therefore, it is assessed as Vulnerable.

Assessment rationale/justification
This species is widespread within mountains in the north-east of the UAE. Whilst some subpopulations may have been impacted by grazing, individuals at higher altitudes without this pressure are able to flourish and become dominant within their community. Therefore, it is thought that the species still qualifies as Least Concern.

This is an annual herb species with much-branched stems that can grow up to 50 cm (Jongbloed et al. 2003, Mahmoud et al. 2018). Its leaves are fleshy and narrowly segmented into alternating linear lobes of up to 15 cm in length (Jongbloed et al. 2003). Mauve, sweet smelling flowers are present between February and May (Jongbloed et al. 2003). The fruits are either straight or slightly curved, ranging fro 1-1.5 cm in length with a narrow thread like appendage at the tip (Jongbloed et al. 2003). It is generally found growing in gravel plains and terraces, in addition to fields within the mountains (Jongbloed et al. 2003, G.R. Feulner pers. comm. 2019). This species is a food plant for the Baton Blue butterfly, Pseudophilotes sinaicus, in addition to a beetle species, Lyttonyx bicolor (Gillett and Gillett 1996, Feulner 2005).

Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
The presence of this species in the UAE is not yet confirmed, although presence in parts of the Ru'us al-Jibal close to Oman is possible as suitable habitat occurs at similar elevations (G.R. Feulner pers. comm. 2019), and S. Ghazanfar (pers. comm. 2019) reports that there is a specimen at held at RBG Kew from the UAE. Feulner (2011) recorded the species from a site in the Ru'us al-Jibal of Oman (Awshaq basin and As-Sayh/As-Saye plain) to the northeast of the Sahasa plain, on slopes beside the open upper reaches of a wadi below Jebel Harim and Ra's Mintera (G.R. Feulner pers. comm. 2019). Other records found from the area are: (1) Patzelt et al. (2014; rocky limestone plateau; 1,450 m, northern Oman: Musandam, Jebel Harim, Sahil Al Sahosa (Sahasa plain)), and (2) <a href=""http://data.rbge.org.uk/herb/E00903483"">RBGE Herbarium</a> (coll. A. Assessment rationale/justification
The species occurs in the Ru'us al Jibal in Oman close to the border with the UAE, and is reported to be known from a collection (RBG Kew) from the UAE. However, there is no information available on population size and trend in the UAE, and confirmation of presence in the country requires confirmation, and so it is currently considered Data Deficient for the UAE National Red List.

It is not known whether the species is edible, but pressure from grazing goats exists in the areas concerned (both the known localities in the Ru'us al-Jibal of Oman and the potential habitat in adjacent parts of the UAE), so grazing could be a factor limiting current records (G.R. Feulner pers. comm. 2019). Global climate change, if it results in decreasing rainfall patterns and/or higher temperatures, could also impact the species.

The EOO, based on the map from Jongbloed et al. (2003) and the records from Shahid (2017), is highly restricted, at less than 200 km2. The AOO is a maximum of c. 180 km2 but is likely to be very much less. Assessment rationale/justification
In the UAE, this species is restricted to the Ru'us al-Jibal. The extent of occurrence (EOO) is highly restricted, at less than 200 km2. The AOO is a maximum of c. 180 km2 but is likely to be very much less. The species is likely to be subject to grazing by livestock and feral animals, however the impact of this threat on the species is uncertain. In natural habitats, the species is generally found as single plants and the overall population size is restricted, however it may be overlooked. The species has been found recently to be more common in agricultural areas, however in natural habitats it is very much less frequently found. Whilst there is insufficient information on the plant in natural habitats, the species is precautionary assessed as Near Threatened on the basis of its known restricted EOO and suspected restricted AOO, although the number of locations (based on occurrence in natural habitats exceeds ten). It is possible that the number of mature individuals may also be restricted, and the species may also qualify as threatened or Near Threatened under criterion D.

Habitat
Habitat details as listed in assessment
This annual herb species can grow up to 40 cm in height and is often observed as climbing on other surrounding vegetation (Jongbloed et al. 2003, Norton et al. 2009). The lance-shaped leaves are arranged in whorls and the edges are covered in small spines (Jongbloed et al. 2003). The fruit is round and hairy while the flowers are small and white and can be seen between February and April (Jongbloed et al. 2003). It is generally found growing within wadis and fields, in addition to sheltered locations on hillsides (Jongbloed et al. 2003).

Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
Within the UAE, it has been recorded from the Ru'us al-Jibal (Jongbloed et al. 2003), although this occurrence is now considered uncertain and may refer to one or more other Galium species (Feulner 2011, 2016) and its presence in the country requires confirmation. The species has not been confirmed from Oman, with a record from there requiring confirmation (S. Ghazanfar pers. comm. 2019). Globally, the native range of this species spans across Europe, to the Arabian Peninsula and to the western Himalayas (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019).

Assessment rationale/justification
Records of this species within the UAE, specifically in the Ru'us al-Jibal and Wadi Wurayah National Park, are uncertain, in large part due to the difficulty of distinguishing it from other Galium species such as G. aparine and G. ceratopodium, also recorded form the UAE. As a result, it is assessed as Data Deficient, and confirmation of the presence and distribution of the species in the country is required.
