Habitat details as listed in assessment
It a perennial species that grows as a climber, on trees such as Acacia species (Jongbloed et al. 2003, Norton et al. 2009, MEW 2010). In general, it grows in the area of xero-tropical arborescent vegetation (Ghazanfar and Fisher 1998). The vines are found in plantations, on mountains and hills (Jongbloed et al. 2003, MEW 2010), in addition to cliffs near the sea (Feulner 2011). It prefers wadis, wadi slopes, rocky habitats and ravine beds within these environments (Feulner 2014, 2016). The vines can grow in length up to 100 cm or more, with slender leaves and small green-yellow flowers which are present between January and May (Jongbloed et al. 2003). Its fruit is small, round and dark red with enclosed seeds (Jongbloed et al. 2003).

This annual species has slender stems and can reach up to 0.3 m in height (Jongbloed et al. 2003). It has feathered leaves which are deeply dissected into lobes, in addition to white-pink flowers with purple spots between February and April (Jongbloed et al. 2003). It also produces fruit in the form of a round nut (Jongbloed et al. 2003). Generally, it is reported as growing in plantations and agricultural areas, in addition to oases, wadis and shaded habitats, as it prefers environments with moisture (Jongbloed et al. 2003, G.R. Feulner, in litt, MEW 2010, Feulner 2011).

Species
Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
Within the UAE, this species has been recorded from Kutwah, Wadi Diftah and the Ru'us al-Jibal (Jongbloed et al. 2003, Feulner 2011). In the Ru'us al-Jibal, it is recorded up to at least 1,350 m in altitude (Feulner 2011). Globally, the native range of this species spans across western Europe and the Mediterranean, including Pakistan (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019). The species has been very widely introduced globally, and is sometimes considered a weed. The species may well be native to the UAE, but given its wide use as a medicinal plant, introduction is possible.

Assessment rationale/justification
This species prefers moisture-rich environments such as plantations and other irrigated agricultural areas, oases and wadis, and shaded areas. Due to these ecological requirements (rather than specific threats to the species), it is understandably rarer than other species which are better adapted for the arid conditions of this country. However, this species persists, and whilst its distribution is not well understood, it is assumed to be greater than currently mapped. Therefore, it is assessed as Least Concern.

Assessment rationale/justification
In the UAE, the species is known from historical records from Fujairah Emirate (between Khatt and Dibla) and from Abu Dhabi Emirate (Abu Dhabi Island), in addition to Sharjah. Confirmation of the presence and distribution of the species in the UAE is required, in addition to confirmation as to whether this species is separate from Solanum nigrum. In the UAE, the species is recorded from the Ru'us al-Jibal (Jongbloed et al. 2003), where it is occasional between c.500-1,600 m asl, and also present, more rarely, in the Hajar Mountains immediately to south (Feulner 2011). Records include Jebel Jais (Ras Al Khaimah), Wadi Al Hilo (Fujairah; origin uncertain; Sharjah Seedbank & Herbarium), and from the Al Ain area (origin uncertain; Sajjad et al. 2017). The species is reportedly common in the northern Oman foothills (Ghazanfar 1992). This species is listed as an introduced landscape plant by MoCCaE (O. Al Shamsi pers. comm. 2018). The UAE native plant working group considered the species to be native to the UAE, and it is retained here on that basis. The species is native across north-east Africa, extending southwards into Somalia and Kenya, westwards to Senegal, across the Middle East, and as far eastwards as northern Pakistan and northern India (Samuels 2012).

Assessment rationale/justification
This species is loosely associated with inhabited areas and cultivation, however it is a ruderal species and the UAE is within its global range; therefore, it is likely to be native to the UAE. Assessment rationale/justification
This species appears to be known from three areas in the UAE. There are two records from mountains around Hatta (precise localities not known), and the species also occurs on Jebel Hafeet, with an additional record from Ra's Al Khaimah. No recent records from either Jebel Hafeet or from the Hatta area have been found, and nothing is known of the current population size or trend of the species. It has been considered to be 'rare' although 'locally common' in Wadi Tarabat on Jebel Hafeet. This is an annual species that grows up to 30 cm in height (Jongbloed et al. 2003). The basal leaves are arranged in a rosette structure and are individually lance-shaped with smooth edges, while the upper leaves can be more rounded (Jongbloed et al. 2003). Blue flowers can be seen between February and April (Jongbloed et al. 2003). It typically grows on gravel wadi banks and on low mountain slopes within the Hajar Mountains (Jongbloed et al. 2003). The species is reportedly more abundant and widespread following rainy years (MEW 2010, Feulner 2016).
