Qualifier(s): Secure Overseas, Data Poor; Note(s): Recent molecular analysis suggests that there are 3 species worldwide and geographic structure within species. Nomenclature still uncertain. In NZ confined to NE coast between East Cape and North Cape, within 10 nautical miles of shore (survey extended to 25 nm, but not seen further out); one stranding on Portland Island. Debate about extent of isolation of individuals sighted in NE NZ. Precautionary approach taken in this listing. Mortality due to ship strike and entanglement occurring several times per year. NZ population size estimated to be around 100, but considerable uncertainty about this.. One Location qualifier removed and Data Poor added.
