Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
Originally thought to occur in just scattered locations (Jongbloed et al. 2003), this species is now thought to be more widespread (MEW 2010). Western (1991) recorded the species from Sir Bani Yas Island in plantations, although the origin there requires confirmation. The species occurs in Wadi Wurayah National Park (WWNP), where it is common in peri-anthropic waste ground (Feulner 2016). In the southern Hajar Mountains in the UAE, the species occurs along the ridge tops in the 'Olive Highlands' (Feulner 2014). Sharjah Seedbank & Herbarium hold specimens from inland localities (including in Sharjah, R'as al-Khaimah and in Sharjah Emirate on the east coast at Kalba. The species is considered native to North America, Africa and the Arabian Peninsula (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019). The native status of the species in the Americas has been controversial, but molecular research suggests that it is native there (Martín-Bravo et al. 2007).

The species is found on compacted sand, along roadsides, in silt between rocks in wadis, and in disturbed areas. It is an annual or biennial species that grows to 0.3 m in height (Jongbloed et al. 2003).
Threats listed in assessment
There is no information available on population size or trend, however subpopulations are inferred to be declining as a result of coastal development.

It is an annual species with slender stems and can grow up to 25 cm in height (Jongbloed et al. 2003). The leaves are dissected into lobes and have toothed edges, while its fruit is a valved capsule with stiff white hairs (Jongbloed et al. 2003). The flowers are dark violet and purple in colour and can be seen between February and April (Jongbloed et al. 2003). Generally, this species is recorded as growing between rocks and in fallow fields on mountains; it also is found in moist and shaded environments (Jongbloed et al. 2003, G.R. This is a tree, usually 2-4 meters high, but sometimes stunted, found in the mountains and wadis (Karim and Dakheel 2006). Assessment rationale/justification
This species has a relatively restricted range, with an estimated EOO of 2340 km2. Due to coastal development and grazing from nearby camel farms, it is inferred to be experiencing an ongoing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat. In addition, it is estimated to occur at fewer than 10 locations. Therefore, it is assessed as Vulnerable.

This species is known from few records in the UAE. Jongbloed et al. (2003) cite two records by R.A. Western from coastal areas of Ajman and Umm al Quwain (<a href=""http://data.rbge.org.uk/herb/E00043043"">RBGE Herbarium</a>; R.A. Western; 1985, ""Umm al Quwain to Moola Road""). <a href=""http://data.rbge.org.uk/herb/E00043042"">RBGE</a> also hold a specimen (K. Müller-Hohenstein 1986) from dunes near Al Awir (Dubai). G. Brown (pers. comm. 2019) has only seen the species once in the UAE, near coastal sandsheets in Umm Al Quwain. R.A Western collected the species from ""Ruus al Jibal summit"" in 1985 (Western 1985), precise locality not known and possibly not within the UAE. The estimated EOO of this species is 2340 km2 and it is considered to occur at fewer then 10 threat-based locations. The global range of this species is through the Arabian Peninsula to Egypt and the eastern Mediterranean (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019).

Threats listed in assessment
This species is considered to be threatened by coastal development, in addition to overgrazing as a result of multiple camel farms close to or within its range.

This species has always been considered to have a relatively restricted range within the UAE, in addition to have been threatened by grazing and development in the past.

This species is widespread within mountains in the north-east of the UAE. Whilst some subpopulations may have been impacted by grazing, individuals at higher altitudes without this pressure are able to flourish and become dominant within their community. Therefore, it is thought that the species still qualifies as Least Concern.
