Assessment rationale/justification
Fur of this species ishighly valued, and hunting has caused a decline inthe Mongolian population. Very little population dataexists for this species in Mongolia, but it is known thatbetween 1966 and 1968, densities were estimated tobe 11.7 individuals per 1,000 hectare in central HentiiMountain Range (Stubbe and Chotolchu, 1968), and during the 1970s, there were estimated tobe a total of 10,000 individuals in this region (Chotolchu, 1976). Generation length has beenestimated as seven years, based on data from Nowak (1991). As a population reduction of atleast 30% over the next three generations is expected to result, Martes zibellina qualifi es asVulnerable under Criterion A3cd. The assessment remains unchanged following applicationof regional criteria as there is no signifi cant immigration from adjacent countries.
