The name Heliotropium kotschyi is an accepted name in The Plant List, but according to the Catalogue of Life, the species is an ambiguous synonym to Heliotropium ramosissimum (Lehm.) Sieb. ex DC. The African Plants Database and Plants of the World Online also place the species as a synonym of Heliotropium ramosissimum.

The species is common and widespread along coasts in the UAE, but also found inland, although absent from deeper and mobile sandy areas and from steeper and higher mountains.The species is endemic to the Arabian Peninsula (Oman to Qatar; Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019). The species is also reported for Bahrain, and likely also occurs in Saudi Arabia.

This species is found in coastal and sabkha areas, and is tolerant of saline soils. It thrives in semi-saline flats and alluvial gravels, but is absent from deeper and mobile sands, and from higher elevations.
