This species is found in the north of the UAE and into Oman: it has been recorded in the Masafi Hills, Ru'us al-Jibal, the Musandam Mountains and northern Hajar Mountains (Western 1991, Jongbloed et al. 2003, Feulner 2011). It is thought to be native to the UAE (Norton et al. 2009). The native range of this species is from Africa to temperate Asia (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019).

This species is found in wadis, wadi banks, gullies and on hillsides at low to medium altitudes (Jongbloed et al. 2003, MEW 2010, Feulner 2011, 2016). It is an annual species that grows up to 25 cm in height (Jongbloed et al. 2003). It flowers between February and April and produces fruit in the form of a capsule enclosed within bracts (Jongbloed et al. 2003). It has been known to grow in gravel environments and shade (Feulner 2011).

Grazing by livestock may impact the species in parts of its range (Shahid 2017). It may also be threatened by floods in tributary wadi habitats (Feulner 2016).
