Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
The species is known from lower altitude hillsides from Masafi and Dibba (MEW 2010). It is described as being most common at high altitudes in the Ru'us al-Jibal, and can be found in scattered, usually relatively mesic, locations throughout this area (MEW 2010; Feulner 2011, 2016; G.R. Feulner pers. comm. 2020). Its native range is from the east of Egypt to Pakistan (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019).

Recorded on hillsides in shaded, damp sites, often near plantations (MEW 2010). They are considered to require more water than other plants within this habitat and are an annual species (G.R. Feulner, in litt, MEW 2010). Physically, the species is a red poppy (Feulner 2011) and is a known crop wild relative of the poppy, Papaver somniferum (Kameswara Rao 2013).
