This species is relatively widespread throughout the desert of the UAE, particularly along the western flank or coast of the country. It is considered to be common and is also known to occur within at least one protected area within its range. Therefore, it is assessed as Least Concern.

Within the UAE, it is widespread across the desert between Ras al Khaimah to Abu Dhabi (Jongbloed et al. 2003). Globally, this species is native to Africa, tropical Asia and temperate Asia (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019).

This annual (or short-lived perennial) herb species grows within compact sand between dunes (Jongbloed et al. 2003, Mahmoud et al. 2018). The plant can reach up to 60 cm in height, has variable leaf shapes and sizes, mauve flowers which can be seen between February and May, in addition to black, oblong seeds contained within a sparsely hairy capsule (Jongbloed et al. 2003).
