Species
Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
This species appears to be known from a small number of mostly old records. R.A. Western collected the species in 1982 from Umm an-Nar between the old and new Abu Dhabi airports (<a href=""http://data.rbge.org.uk/herb/E00140039"">RBGE Herbarium</a>), and again in 1982 from an adjacent site: a small island close to the new airport (<a href=""http://data.rbge.org.uk/herb/E00140044"">RGBE Herbarium</a>). The continued presence of the species in this area requires confirmation due to the extensive development that has occurred since the species was collected. Jongbloed et al. (2003) mention the species without localities, simply stating that it occurs along the Arabian Gulf coast. The global range of this species is through the Arabian Peninsula to Iran and Pakistan (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019). Farsetia heliophila is also known to occur in the Musandam in Oman.

Assessment rationale/justification
Although Jongbloed et al. (2003) mention that the species occurs along the Arabian Gulf coast, only two herbarium records have been found for this species, both from a single locality and dating to 1982. No further, or more recent, data have been found, and the species is considered Data Deficient. Research is required to confirm the continued occurrence of the species at the locality near Abu Dhabi, and to determine its current distribution within the UAE.

Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
In the UAE, this species was recorded by M. Jongbloed from the base of Jebel Hafeet (Jongbloed et al. 2003). The distribution is uncertain as a result of confusion with other members of the genus, particularly Fagonia indica (MEW 2010). The global distribution of the species is from Egypt in the west to Pakistan in the east and to Kenya and Somalia in the south (Beier 2005). This is one of the most widespread species in Oman (S. Ghazanfar pers. comm. 2019).

Assessment rationale/justification
In the UAE, this species was recorded by M. Jongbloed from the base of Jebel Hafeet (Jongbloed et al. 2003). The distribution is uncertain as a result of confusion with other members of the genus, particularly F. indica. The draft Red Data Book for the UAE (MEW 2010) considered all collections from Jebel Hafeet to be referable to Fagonia indica. Therefore, this species is currently assessed as Data Deficient pending research into Fagonia species taxonomy.

Habitat
Habitat details as listed in assessment
The species grows as a succulent shrub on rocky slopes and gravel terraces within montane habitats (Perry 2008, Feulner 2011, EAD 2018, Mahmoud et al. 2018). It is a perennial evergreen species which is present throughout spring and summer (Sturt and Stuart 1998, Fawzi and Ksiksi 2012). The lower stems of the plant are woody while the younger stems are bright green (Jongbloed et al. 2003). Round fruit is produced by the plant and it flowers between November to April (Jongbloed et al. 2003). Euphorbia larica is a characteristic species of rocky and stony slopes within the high Hajar Mountains, showing resistance to drought stress and acting as an indicator species for east-facing montane slopes (El-Kablway et al. 2016). It makes use of shallow, spreading roots which capture rain easily (Feulner 2016).

Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
Within the UAE it is known from a single low altitude locality within the Ru'us al-Jibal (Feulner 2011). Globally, this species is native to Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and through to Pakistan according to Plants of the Wold online (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019). However, there appears to be some uncertainty; Randall (2017) considers it a weed, dispersed by humans and livestock, that is native to Africa, whilst Pahlevani (2017) considers it native to Asia (Saudi Arabia and Yemen only) and Africa.

Assessment rationale/justification
Whilst Feulner (2011) recorded this species from a single locality in the Ru'us al-Jibal, Jongbloed et al. (2003) considered it to be a garden weed, suggesting a more widespread distribution, but also raising a question over the origin of the species in the UAE, and recent publications (Pahlevani 2017, Randall 2017) do not place the UAE within the native range of the species. The species is placed here as Data Deficient pending further research.

Assessment rationale/justification
Although this species is known to occur within the Hajar Mountains, detailed information regarding its population size and trend is lacking. It is not considered to be a common species, although it may be under-recorded due to its resemblance to the much more common E. hispanica (G.R. Feulner pers. comm. 2020). Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
In the UAE, the species is common on gravel plains and wadi terraces of the western slopes of the Hajar Mountains (Feulner 2016). There are records of this species in Abu Dhabi Emirate (Brown and Sakkir 2004), and from the buffer zone of Wadi Wurayah National Park (park HQ area, and from disused wadi fields at low elevations in the Ru'us al-Jibal; Feulner 2016), although it is uncertain if the Ru'us al-Jibal localities mentioned by Feulner (2011) are within the UAE. Although it is a weed of cultivated crops and is likely to be more widespread than the available records suggest, the UAE native plant working group considered it to be native to the country. The native range of this species is the tropical and subtropical Old World, across almost all of Africa, east through the Arabian Peninsula to southeast Asia; very widely introduced to the Americas and to parts of Europe (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2018).

Assessment rationale/justification
This is a small grass often considered 'rare' but is easily overlooked and probably under-represented in botanical surveys. It has been considered a weed globally (Randall 2012) and many of the records in the UAE are associated with cultivated and disturbed areas. It is thought to be widespread along the western slopes of the Hajar Mountains (Feulner 2016), with fewer records from the Ru'us al-Jibal and from the eastern side of the Mountains. This species is relatively widespread in the eastern UAE, and although data are lacking on the population size and trend, the species is assessed as Least Concern as it is thought unlikely that it will approach the thresholds for a threatened category.
