Assessment rationale/justification
This species was first recorded for the UAE in 1996; this single know location at Jebel Qitab, from c. 650 m to c. 1,000 m asl, still remains. The species has an extent of occurrence (EOO) and an area of occupancy (AOO) of less than 20 km2 and occurs in one location, based on drought and the potential threats of grazing. G.R. Feulner (in litt, MEW 2010) reported a maximum of 30 plants, perhaps fewer than 20, and there was little or no regeneration seen. The species is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR D) based on the number of mature individuals being less than 50. Whilst the species occurs at other sites within the Hajar Mountains in Oman, it is thought that there is little opportunity for a rescue effect, and the assessment remains CR.

Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
This species was first recorded for the UAE in 1996 from cliffs on Jebel Qitab at c. 1,000 m asl (Feulner 1997) and this remains the single known site for the species in the UAE. The species is locally common at a small number of localities above c. 800 m elsewhere in Hajar Mountains in Oman (including Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Ghaweel; Feulner 1997). It is absent from the Ru'us al-Jibal in the UAE (Feulner 2011). The species has an EOO and an AOO of less than 20 km2. Jongbloed et al. (2003) show the species in the Wadi Khabb Shamsi gorge, in Oman. The native range of this species is from southern Africa, through the Arabian Peninsula, to northwestern India (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019).

Habitat details as listed in assessment
The species is found on moist and sheltering northeast facing slopes, summit cliffs and ravines at Jebel Qitab (Feulner 2014). It generally grows amongst rocks, where it is often found spread below other large shrubs or trees (Feulner 2014), and is often associated with olive trees (G.R. Feulner, in litt, MEW 2010). Little or no regeneration is seen.
Threats listed in assessment
The species has been impacted in the past by periods of drought (Feulner 2014). Grazing by feral donkeys and goats may also pose a threat.
History
The species was first seen in 1997, when they were in better condition (wetter years) but with the same or similar number of individuals.

The species is absent from Wadi Wurayah National Park (WWNP) according to Feulner (2016; only found in the upper parts of Wadi Siji) but was reported for the protected area by Judas (2016). The species has also been recorded (Sharjah Seedbank & Herbarium) from Fili on the Sharjah-Kalba Road (Sharjah) and from the coast in Ras Al Khaimah, however both these records are excluded as outside the natural range of the species in the UAE. The global range of this species is from north-east Africa, through the Arabian Peninsula to southern Iran and Pakistan (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019).

Assessment rationale/justification
In the UAE, this species is found along the Arabian Gulf coast. The estimated EOO of this species is 779 km2 and is estimated to occur at three threat-based locations. Echiochilon jugatum is undergoing a continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat due to ongoing coastal development in the UAE. For example, the Taweela subpopulation of this species has now been lost due to the construction of an aluminium plant. Therefore, it is assessed as Endangered.

In the UAE, this species is found along the Gulf coast, including Ras al-Khiamah (Jongbloed et al. 2003, MEW 2010) although Hornby (2005), who previously found the species at Taweela, considered it to be a ""very thinly spread"" species. The estimated EOO of E. jugatum is 779 km2 and is considered to occur at three locations based on ongoing degradation and development. The global range of this species is through the Arabian Peninsula from sea level to 200 m asl in Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Oman (Långström 2002), and Saudi Arabia (Norton et al. 2009).

Assessment rationale/justification
In the UAE, this species is restricted to the southern Hajar Mountains and to Jebel Hafeet. The extent of occurrence (EOO) is restricted, and the area of occupancy (AOO) is also likely to be highly restricted given the scattered distribution. The species occurs in more than ten locations, including protected areas, however the population size is inferred to be low, likely to be less than 1,000 mature individuals. As a result, the species qualifies as Vulnerable (D1). Whilst the species occurs in Oman, the potential for any rescue effect is not known, and no regional adjustment is applied.

Assessment rationale/justification
This species is considered to be rare within its range and is often grazed to the point of visibly stunted growth. This may pose a significant threat to the species, however the full extent of this is still unclear. Although the species occurs in a National Park, it is important to draw attention to this potentially threatened and rare species. As a result, it is cautiously assessed as Vulnerable (D1) as a result of the small number of mature individuals, which is suspected to be close to or less than 1,000, but no reliable count has been made. It also has a restricted distribution (estimated EOO: 6,378 km2). The species occurs in adjacent parts of Oman and the seed is wind-dispersed, therefore the assessment is revised down by one category to Near Threatened.

This is a perennial or annual succulent that grows up to 35 cm (Western 1992, Jongbloed et al. 2003). It produces purple flowers between February and May, in addition to characteristic pickle-shaped fruit, and grows among rocks, gravel plains, wadis and mountains (Jongbloed et al. 2003, Feulner 2016). When the plant is damaged, it secretes milky sap (latex) which is characteristic of Asciepiadaceae species (Western 1992). The species is considered to be a xerohalophyte i.e. a salt-tolerant desert species (Böer and Saenger 2006).
Threats listed in assessment
