Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
The species is widespread along the Arabian Gulf coast from west of Abu Dhabi city to Ras al-Khaimah, along the east coast, and through the Hajar Mountains to Al Ain (Jongbloed et al. 2003). This species has a very broad native distribution in the Old World according to Plants of the World Online (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2018), however, according to CABI (2018) the species has its centre of origin in the Mediterranean region, but has since spread widely throughout the tropics and sub-tropics.

Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
In the UAE, the species occurs within the Hajar Mountains and along the east coast (Jongbloed et al. 2003), and has also been recorded from Jebel Hafeet, including Wadi Tarabat (Sakkir and Brown 2014, EAD (S. Sakkir pers. comm. 2019). The origin of the species in the UAE has been questioned, and the UAE native plant working group (June 2019) did not reach a consensus on this species. The species has a wide global distribution through Africa and southern Europe to East Asia (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019). The species is found throughout Oman (in sandy and rocky wadis, beside roads, near cultivation, and in disturbed and waste ground; S. Ghazanfar pers. comm. 2019). Elsewhere in the Arabian Peninsula found in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen (S. Ghazanfar pers. comm. 2019).

This annual species has slender stems and can reach up to 0.5 m in height (Jongbloed et al. 2003). It climbs on surrounding vegetation and has downward pointing prickles on both the spines and the leaf whorls, which give the plant a 'sticky' feel (Jongbloed et al. 2003). The fruit is a round, hairy capsule and the small white flowers can be seen between February and April (Jongbloed et al. 2003). It generally grows within mountain wadis and in plantations (Jongbloed et al. 2003). G.R. Feulner (in litt, MEW 2010) notes that it is found in the same habitats as G. ceratopodum, in the foothills and wadis, on silty soils amongst stones and near water channels and runnels.

Taxonomic Notes
A large number of synonyms have been described for this widespread species.
Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
Within the UAE, it has been recorded from the Ru'us al-Jibal where it is known from all elevations (Jongbloed et al. 2003). It is known to occur as far north as Jebel Jais and has also been recorded from Wadi Naqab (M. Tsaliki pers. comm. 2019). Its range extends into the northern Hajar Mountains, and an unidentified Galium species has been recorded from Wadi Wurayah National Park (Feulner 2016). The origin of the species in the UAE requires confirmation, and the species is considered introduced to the UAE by MoCCaE (O. Al Shamsi pers. comm. 2018). The global native range of this species is obscure and it is considered to be be very widely introduced and naturalised (GRIN 2019). Plants of the World Online considers it to be native to Europe, northern Africa and temperate and tropical Asia (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019). It has also been introduced to the Americas, Greenland and Australasia (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019).

Nerium oleander is reported to be associated with areas comprising wet sand, standing water and along the margins of shall water bodies (Rothfels et al. 2012, Patzelt 2015). Despite its affinity for water, it is also a halophyte and is frequently found in salty habitats (Karim and Dakheel 2006). It is has been found growing within deep, canyon-like wadis at low altitudes (Patzelt 2015) and is generally considered to be a characteristic species of wadis (El-Keblawy et al. 2016). This dense evergreen shrub species is considered to be poisonous which causes goats, and other browsers, to ignore this plant (Ghazanfar and Fisher 1998, Karim and Dakheel 2006, El-Keblawy et al. 2016). It has woody stems, can grow to heights of 1-4 m and produces large pink flowers between September and March (Jongbloed et al. 2003, Karim and Dakheel 2006).

This species appears to be generally common within and characteristic of its preferred environments. It is not threatened by browsing, as the entirety of the plant is poisonous, however its affinity for water could decrease its resistance to droughts and rising temperatures. The species is found on bedrock wadi banks and coarse gravel wadi beds, particularly near areas with permanent or intermittent surface water pools from 200 m to 700 m asl. The species has also been recorded from plantations in the Hajar Mountains. It is a small and elusive diurnal species, which upon detection of a potential threat will rapidly retreat into rock cracks and crevices. Combined with its small size, long flight distance and the rocky habitat it occupies, the species is often under-sampled during surveys. It is active throughout the year, although during the summer months, activity is limited to the early mornings and late afternoons. They appear to be predominantly solitary, with pairing observed during the cooler months from October to May. Females lay several clutches of two to three large eggs measuring 9 by 4 mm (Gardner 2013). Hatchling measured 25 mm snout to tail length with a tail length of 55 mm (Gardner 2013).

Assessment rationale/justification
Within the United Arab Emirates, this species occurs throughout the Hajar Mountains. The species is listed as Least Concern as there are no significant threats within the majority of its area of occupancy (100 km2) and because it is unlikely to be declining fast enough to qualify for listing in a more threatened category. This taxon is not a non-breeding visitor, and it is presumed that any immigration from populations outside the UAE is not significant, and therefore there is no adjustment to the Category according to the IUCN regional and national Guidelines (IUCN 2012).
