Despite literature presuming this species is regionally extinct (IUCN SSC Antelope Specialist group 2008), surveys in 2010 give a total of 9 reedbuck in the Greater Virunga landscape and elsewhere also very low numbers and declining (estimated 400 in KVNP, Karenga (WCS, 2014)

Sightings in Napak and Aleklek in mid 1990, Napak 2014, Mt Moroto not since 1970s (Kingdon). Ranking as EN based on presumption of mature individuals less than 2500, given the very few sightings of this antelope. Sport hunting concession operating in Eastern Uganda likely to reduce numbers further
