Assessment rationale/justification
This species was previously considered as Least Concern (MEW 2010) and was thought to be common within its range. However, there is no sound information about its distribution or any information about potential threats to the species, or about its use or trade, which makes it difficult to judge the extinction risk to this species. In addition, Jongbloed et al. (2003) suggest that this species may actually be part of Kohautia caespitosa. As a result, it is assessed as Data Deficient.

Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
Within the UAE, it is suggested that Kohautia retrorsa may actually refer to Kohautia caespitosa (Jongbloed et al. 2003). K. caespitosa is thought to occur in the southern Hajar Mountains (Jongbloed et al. 2003). Globally, this species occurs from the Arabian Peninsula (UAE, Yemen) through to northwest India (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019).

Habitat details as listed in assessment
It is known to grow in sand and silt habitats (MEW 2010). This species has a herb growth form and it is suggested that it has a facultative life cycle, potentially depending on other species for nutrients (Fawzi and Ksiksi 2012).
