Assessment rationale/justification
Despite many sightings in the past two decades from eastern Canada, there are insufficient data to evaluate the taxonomy or assign a status to this cougar.

Assessment rationale/justification
The population frequenting Canadian waters was reduced earlier in the century by drive fisheries and recovery may be slow due to incidental entrapments, pollutants and depletion of prey species; however, there are no immediate threats to the population.; La pêche par rabattage a fait diminuer la taille de la population qui fréquente les eaux canadiennes au début du siècle et il se peut que les captures accidentelles, les polluants et la disparition des espèces proies ralentissent son rétablissement; cependant, rien ne menace cette population dans l'immédiat.
