Assessment rationale/justification
The species has a circumpolar Arctic distribution. No complete, reliable or recent estimates of total abundance and spatial distribution in Canada are available, nor is any reliable information available on population trends. The species remains widespread in areas of broken pack ice. It is known to be highly dependent on sea ice as a platform used to haul out to rest, moult, give birth and nurse pups. However, the information available on climate and sea ice changes and how such changes might affect the species is insufficient to support an evaluation of their potential as a population-level threat to the species.; Cette espèce a une aire de répartition circumpolaire arctique.

Assessment rationale/justification
This species is rarely reported in its Canadian range. There are, however, a few sites in the Okanagan Valley where they regularly can be captured during the summer. There is a lack of data about the extent of its Canadian range and the habitat that is important for foraging and roosting. We also do not know the population size or trends, nor any key demographic characteristics, such as population structure, reproduction or survival rates. It is not known if this species overwinters in Canada or migrates south for the winter; however, there are maternity colonies recorded in Canada.; Cette espèce est rarement observée dans son aire de répartition canadienne. Assessment rationale/justification
The situation for this species is generally similar to that for any species of bat that occurs in Canada. There are no data about populations sizes, populations trends, or patterns of reproduction (it is not known if females bear young annually; age at sexual maturity is unknown), and there are only scattered records documenting occurrence and patterns of distribution. Furthermore, there is a lack of information about patterns of habitat use (roosting, foraging) or data about migration. Uncertainty about the taxonomic status of this species further complicates the matter. It is unknown if it is a distinct taxon.
