Assessment rationale/justification
This species is known from a few scattered localities within the northeast of the UAE. It has an estimated EOO of 3,992 km2 and occurs at four locations. Due to grazing, it is undergoing a continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat. Therefore, it is assessed as Endangered.

Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
Within the UAE, this species has been recorded from Al Ain and Sharjah (Jongbloed et al. 2003), in addition to two other scattered localities within the northeast of the country (Sharjah Seed Bank and Herbarium pers. comm. 2019). The estimated EOO of this species is 3,992 km2 and it is considered to occur at four locations, based on the most important threat of grazing. Globally, the native range of this species spans across the Sahara, Kenya and India, including the Arabian Peninsula (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019).

Polygala irregularis typically grows within stable sand between sand dunes (Jongbloed et al. 2003), although it has also been recorded from a road-side in Al Ain.

Plocama aucheri is known to occur in the Hajar Mountains, however it prefers low altitudes, and is considered as rare above c. 700 m and absent above c. 1,100 m (Feulner 2011). It is also recorded from the foot of Jebel Hafeet, where it is thought to be frequent (Perry 2008). This species is found growing at low altitudes of montane habitats (Feulner 2011, Mahmoud et al. 2018), typically within wadi and terrace habitats (Feulner 2016). Plocama aucheri can also be found growing in gravel plains (Jongbloed et al. 2003). It is a perennial shrub that produces white trumpet flowers between January and May and has worm-like leaves (Jongbloed et al. 2003, Fawzi and Ksiksi 2012, Feulner 2016). The shrub is moderately salt tolerant and can grow in salty wadi environments (Karim and Dakheel 2006).
Threats and conservation measures listed
Threats listed in assessment
This species appears to be grazed (Feulner 2011, Shahid 2017), which may threaten it within parts of its distribution. However, other sources also claim that it isn't browsed by livestock (Jongbloed et al. 2003, Feulner 2016).

The species was recorded for the UAE (Hatta area) by Böer and Chaudhary (1999). RBG Edinburgh Herbarium holds two specimens of Pimpinella cf. puberula from the UAE; 1. <a href=""http://data.rbge.org.uk/herb/E00648740"">Fujairah Emirate</a> (date palm oasis beside Wadi Seder, between Khatt and Dibba, in an area of steep rocky hills and wadis, however this locality requires confirmation), collected by R.A. Western, 1982; and 2. <a href=""http://data.rbge.org.uk/herb/E00648741"">Wadi al Fay, Hatta</a>, 1984: although the herbarium record cites this for the UAE, the coordinates given (24'° 42' N, 56'° 11' E) are in Oman. The species was also recorded by Karim and Fawzi (2007) from R'as al Khaimah, Khor Fakkan, and from Al Ain. The species has a disjunct temperate Asian distribution that perhaps requires confirmation; known from the Arabian Peninsula and from Central Asia (western China (Xinjiang, Hami), Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, southern Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan) (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019). The species is also recorded from Iran.

Assessment rationale/justification
Although this species is described as rare within the UAE, this may reflect the fact that it is typically found at high elevations (where it is thought to be locally common) which may be hard to sample. As a result, it appears that this species may just be ecologically selective and therefore flourish within these specific environments. In addition, it is known to occur within at least one protected area. However, it would also be useful to better understand the effect that overgrazing has on this species' population. For now, it is assessed as Least Concern.

Assessment rationale/justification
This species is restricted to a single location within the UAE. It is rare, with no more than 25 mature individuals seen, and is now thought to be threatened by human disturbance as a result of improved access to the area for leisure activities, such as hiking. Based on this, the species habitat is inferred to decline in quality. This decline, combined with an estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) of 4 km2, this species is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii), D). The species is also considered threatened elsewhere in the Gulf region, and no regional rescue effect is applied.

Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
Jongbloed et al. (2003) recorded this species from the hills between Masafi and Dibba in the northeast of the UAE, in addition to Wadi Diftah and the Ru'us al-Jibal. However, the identity of records require confirmation, and pending further study, we consider there to be one species in the UAE, P. decaisnei. Globally, this species is native to Europe, Africa, temperate Asia and the western Himalayas (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019).

Habitat details as listed in assessment
This annual, red poppy species can reach up to 0.3 m in height and has slender stems (Jongbloed et al. 2003). Its leaves are deeply dissected, it has black seeds and scarlet flowers which can be seen between February and April (Jongbloed et al. 2003). Typically, it is found growing within wadis and on mountains at low elevations (Jongbloed et al. 2003). Papaver species appear to prefer moist soils in shaded places, especially in agricultural or cultivated contexts (Feulner 2011). This species is a crop wild relative of the poppy, Papaver somniferum (Kameswara Rao 2013).

Assessment rationale/justification
Whilst there is little information available on the threats this species faces, and detailed information on distribution and knowledge of current population status and trend is absent, the distribution of the species is such that it is assessed as Least Concern.

Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
The species is known from lower altitude hillsides from Masafi and Dibba (MEW 2010). It is described as being most common at high altitudes in the Ru'us al-Jibal, and can be found in scattered, usually relatively mesic, locations throughout this area (MEW 2010; Feulner 2011, 2016; G.R. Feulner pers. comm. 2020). Its native range is from the east of Egypt to Pakistan (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019).

Habitat
Habitat details as listed in assessment
Recorded on hillsides in shaded, damp sites, often near plantations (MEW 2010). They are considered to require more water than other plants within this habitat and are an annual species (G.R. Feulner, in litt, MEW 2010). Physically, the species is a red poppy (Feulner 2011) and is a known crop wild relative of the poppy, Papaver somniferum (Kameswara Rao 2013).
Threats and conservation measures listed
Threats listed in assessment
The habitat of this species is vulnerable to change through the development of plantations (MEW 2010).
