Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
Originally thought to occur in just scattered locations (Jongbloed et al. 2003), this species is now thought to be more widespread (MEW 2010). Western (1991) recorded the species from Sir Bani Yas Island in plantations, although the origin there requires confirmation. The species occurs in Wadi Wurayah National Park (WWNP), where it is common in peri-anthropic waste ground (Feulner 2016). In the southern Hajar Mountains in the UAE, the species occurs along the ridge tops in the 'Olive Highlands' (Feulner 2014). Sharjah Seedbank & Herbarium hold specimens from inland localities (including in Sharjah, R'as al-Khaimah and in Sharjah Emirate on the east coast at Kalba. The species is considered native to North America, Africa and the Arabian Peninsula (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019). The native status of the species in the Americas has been controversial, but molecular research suggests that it is native there (Martín-Bravo et al. 2007).

This is a tree, usually 2-4 meters high, but sometimes stunted, found in the mountains and wadis (Karim and Dakheel 2006). The species was recorded for Wadi Helo (El-Keblawy 2011) but not recorded for that area by the later El-Keblawy et al. (2016). Sharjah Seedbank & Herbarium hold specimens from Wadi Helo (Fujairah), Al Ain (Abu Dhabi), and Wadi Al Nahw, Oman. Its leaves are fleshy and narrowly segmented into alternating linear lobes of up to 15 cm in length (Jongbloed et al. 2003). Mauve, sweet smelling flowers are present between February and May (Jongbloed et al. 2003). The fruits are either straight or slightly curved, ranging fro 1-1.5 cm in length with a narrow thread like appendage at the tip (Jongbloed et al. 2003). It is generally found growing in gravel plains and terraces, in addition to fields within the mountains (Jongbloed et al. 2003, G.R. Feulner pers. comm. 2019). This species is a food plant for the Baton Blue butterfly, Pseudophilotes sinaicus, in addition to a beetle species, Lyttonyx bicolor (Gillett and Gillett 1996, Feulner 2005).

Habitat details as listed in assessment
This species is an annual herb, which can grow up to 35 cm in height (Jongbloed et al. 2003, Brown et al. 2007, Mahmoud et al. 2018). White flowers are produced between February and April, in addition to minute red seeds (Jongbloed et al. 2003). It is more abundant following rain and generally grows within sandy plains and on sand dunes (Ghazanfar and Fisher 1998, Brown et al. 2007, Mahmoud et al. 2018). It is considered to be an important contributor to biomass to these dune and stabilised sand environments (Ghazanfar and Fisher 1998).
Threats and conservation measures listed
Threats listed in assessment
This species is suggested to be at threat from over-collection and habitat loss (Heneidy et al. 2018). Although the exact reason behind the habitat loss hasn't been described in detail, it may well take the form of human expansion and development of residential or tourism areas
