This annual, red poppy species can reach up to 0.3 m in height and has slender stems (Jongbloed et al. 2003). Its leaves are deeply dissected, it has black seeds and scarlet flowers which can be seen between February and April (Jongbloed et al. 2003). Typically, it is found growing within wadis and on mountains at low elevations (Jongbloed et al. 2003). Papaver species appear to prefer moist soils in shaded places, especially in agricultural or cultivated contexts (Feulner 2011). This species is a crop wild relative of the poppy, Papaver somniferum (Kameswara Rao 2013).

Jongbloed et al. (2003) recorded this species from the hills between Masafi and Dibba in the northeast of the UAE, in addition to Wadi Diftah and the Ru'us al-Jibal. However, the identity of records require confirmation, and pending further study, we consider there to be one species in the UAE, P. decaisnei. Globally, this species is native to Europe, Africa, temperate Asia and the western Himalayas (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019).

Assessment rationale/justification
This species appears to be known from just two localities in the UAE; one in Fujairah, and a more recent record from a cultivated area in northern Ra's al-Khaimah. Although the species has been considered Least Concern for the UAE (MEW 2010), its extent of occurrence and area of occupancy are restricted, and little is known of its population size or trend. Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
A detailed distribution for this species within the UAE is currently lacking. The draft UAE Red Data Book states that this species is known from an unconfirmed record in the UAE (MEW 2010). G.R. Feulner (pers. comm. 2019) considers the species to be absent from the UAE, however S. Ghazanfar (pers. comm. 2019) reported that a specimen collected in the UAE is held at RBG Kew. The native range of this species is the Arabian Peninsula (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019). Plants of the World Online gives the range as the Gulf States (Qatar, UAE and Oman), however, Akhani et al. (2013) give the distribution as from Afghanistan, western Pakistan and southeastern Iran (Sistan-o Baluchestan Province).

This species was previously considered as Least Concern (MEW 2010) and was thought to be common within its range. Feulner (2014) comments that the species is perhaps a recently arrived species. The distribution is expanding in the UAE, and it has been recorded from Ajmaan and from Madam (recorded in 1989). Assessment rationale/justification
In the UAE, the species occurs from Hatta southwards in the Hajar Mountains and also occurs on Jebel Hafeet. G.R. Feulner (in litt, MEW 2010) considers that it was possibly introduced in the 1970s or early 1980s. The species was uncommon but is expanding in the UAE, although the origin of the species in the UAE requires further research. Biogeographically, the species might be native, but there are examples of species that occur in Iran and further south in the Hajar Mountains, but not in the UAE (G.R. Feulner pers. comm. 2019). It is considered Data Deficient due to uncertainty over the origin of the species in the UAE. If proven to be native to the country, the species would be Least Concern.

Assessment rationale/justification
This species is known from a currently unconfirmed record in Wadi Bih (Böer and Chaudhary 1999). The habitat (sand sheets) cited by Böer and Chaudhary (1999) is inconsistent with the Wadi Bih locality that they cite. This needs to be confirmed, along with identifying any additional localities, potential threats and uses, in addition to population status and trends.
