Within the UAE, it is thought to be recorded from the Hajar Mountains and the Ru'us al-Jibal (Jongbloed et al. 2003). It has been observed at altitudes up to 1,600 m in the Ru'us al-Jibal (Feulner 2011). It is an annual species that can grow up to 0.25 m in height (Jongbloed et al. 2003). The plant is covered in fine white hair and has lance-shaped leaves, in addition to white or pink flowers which can be seen between February and April (Jongbloed et al. 2003). It is generally found growing in silt between rocks in wadis and fallow fields (Jongbloed et al. 2003). In Oman, the species is found in the foothills of the mountains, on stony slopes, in dry runnels, and amongst stones and rocks, from 450-“1,200 m (S. Ghazanfar pers. comm. 2019).

Assessment rationale/justification
This species is thought to occur in the Ru'us al-Jibal and has also been recorded from the Hatta area, however, a detailed distribution of the species within this area is not available. Little information is also known about the species' habitats and ecology, and the taxonomic identity of this species with respect to Arenaria serpyllifolia requires confirmation. As such, it is assessed as Data Deficient, pending further information into its distribution within the UAE in order to accurately assess its extinction risk.

Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
Within the UAE, a single plant of this species was recorded from Wadi Khabb Shamsi in the Ru'us al-Jibal at high elevations (Feulner 2011, 2014), although it is not clear if this record is from within the UAE or from Oman. It is also known to occur in the Hatta area (MEW 2010) and to the south, in the Jebel Akhdar, Oman (Feulner 2011). The material from the Hajar Mountains in Oman is referable to A. leptocladus, differing from the more robust A. serpyllifolia L. in its distribution and habitat, the latter typically a field weed or a mountain plant (S. Ghazanfar pers. comm. 2019). In Oman it is found at high altitudes (900-2,500 m). This species is native to temperate Eurasia and Africa (MEW 2010, Board of Trustees RBG Kew 2019).

Assessment rationale/justification
Although having been described from a single site in the UAE, it now appears to be ambiguous as to how common this species is in the country. Similar plants are present on limestone hills to the north but have now been determined to be different species. Confirmation of the identity and distribution of this, and related species, is required, and this species is therefore assessed as Data Deficient.

Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
The distribution of this species within the UAE is not well understood. Jongbloed et al. (2003) recorded it from one locality at Qarn Nazwa, and D. Aplin (pers. comm. 2019) recorded the species (i.d. S. Neale RBGE) from the upper parts of Wadi Sahm (Fujairah) at c.600 m elevation. G.R. Brown has seen the species only once, and considers the species to be restricted to limestone areas in the east of the UAE. There is possible confusion and taxonomic uncertainty between this species and other members of the group. Globally, the native range of this species spans from Tanzania to the Sahara and to Pakistan (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019).

Assessment rationale/justification
Much of the published literature on Tamarix passerionoides refers to this species under the synonym, Tamarix aucheriana. In order to accurately assess this species, it's important to determine whether these plants are indeed two distinct species and, if so, determine a detailed distribution for T. passerionoides under its own name to effectively assess its risk of extinction in the UAE. For now, it is assessed as Data Deficient pending further research into its taxonomy.
