Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
The distribution of this species in the UAE is not well known. The synonym Zygophyllum boulosii has been recorded once by B. Böer in the western region of Abu Dhabi (Jongbloed et al. 2003), although Böer and Chaudhary (1999) only mention a record from the east coast. The synonym Tetraena migahidii is locally common in rocky habitats on Jebel Hafeet, especially at higher elevations, as reported by Brown and Sakkir (2004). The global range of this species is from Egypt (Sinai), through the eastern Mediterranean, the Arabian Peninsula (Saudi Arabia only) to Afghanistan and Pakistan (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019).

Habitat details as listed in assessment
Confirmed records of Zygophyllum propinquum include those from the upper parts of Jebel Hafeet, presumably from dry rocky areas. This species is a small shrub which can reach 0.5 m in height.
Threats listed in assessment
Without detailed information on the distribution in the UAE, little can be said about threats, although Jebel Hafeet is within a declared protected area.

This species is known only from a single record from the foothills of the Ru'us al-Jibal. Further research is needed to confirm if this is the only instance of the species within the country, or whether it has a wider distribution, would help to accurately assess the species' extinction risk in the UAE. Therefore, it is currently assessed as Data Deficient.

Assessment rationale/justification
The distribution of this species in the UAE is uncertain due to potential confusion with other members of the genus and there are few, if any, confirmed records. The species is absent from Jongbloed et al. (2003), however their record of Reseda arabica from the base of Jebel Hafeet may refer to R. muricata (MEW 2010). Mahmoud et al. (2018) found the species on gravel plains in their study along the Hajar Mountains in the UAE, and Sharjah Seedbank & Herbarium hold a specimen from a Wadi-Al Helo garden; it is uncertain if this specimen is native or cultivated. This species has been recorded from scattered locations in the Ru'us al-Jibal (Western 1989, Jongbloed et al. 2003, Feulner 2011). Although Plants of the World Online lists the UAE as a native country of occurrence for this species (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019), a more detailed distribution of this species within the country is lacking.
