Assessment rationale/justification
This species is known from a currently unconfirmed record in Wadi Bih (Böer and Chaudhary 1999). The habitat (sand sheets) cited by Böer and Chaudhary (1999) is inconsistent with the Wadi Bih locality that they cite. This needs to be confirmed, along with identifying any additional localities, potential threats and uses, in addition to population status and trends. Currently, this species is assessed as Data Deficient.

Indigofera spinosa is a bush that produces spines along its stems, in addition to pale crimson flowers (Jongbloed et al. 2003). It has a perennial lifecycle (Jongbloed et al. 2003) and is found growing within sand sheets in the UAE (Böer and Chaudry 1999). This species is characteristic of and common within its typical habitats (Ghazanfar and Fisher 1998) in Oman.

Assessment rationale/justification
Previously known only from a record by A.R. Western, the species was recently refound at a single site in Fujairah Emirate (D. Aplin pers. comm. 2020). Although the area of occupancy (4 km2) is restricted and it occurs at a single location based on potential threats, data are lacking on habitat, distribution (AOO and EOO), and the population size and trends, and the species is considered Data Deficient Research is required to confirm the distribution of the species in the UAE, including review of the western locality, and conservation actions are required.

Taxon distribution as listed in assessment
Within the UAE, this species was considered to be known only from a record by A.R. Western, as the synonym Indigofera leptocarpa Hochst. & Steud. ex Balf.f., cited in Jongbloed et al. (2003; it was presumed that this record was based on Western (1989), however the species is not listed in that book). The locality of the record(s) is not known. The species was recently rediscovered at a single site in Fujairah Emirate (i.d. confirmation, B. Schrire and G.P. Lewis); a small population found on a hill on the western edge of Fujairah city (D. Aplin pers. comm. 2020). Globally, the native range of this species include the Sahara and northern Africa, in addition to Namibia, South Africa, Sudan, Socotra, and the Arabian Peninsula (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019). Records in the Arabian Peninsula include Oman, Yemen, and KSA.

Assessment rationale/justification
This species is known from a single location in Hatta, UAE. As the species occurs at a single locality between two roads, any expansion of these roads could threaten the overall existence of Indigofera cordifolia within the UAE, potentially driving it to Critically Endangered, or possibly, Regionally Extinct, within a short amount of time. It is therefore assessed as Vulnerable (VU D2).

Habitat details as listed in assessment
Indigofera cordifolia is has been recorded growing between two roads in a mountainous area. It is considered to be a xerohalophyte (salt-tolerant desert species) and has a therophyte life form, in terms of completing its life cycle when conditions are favourable (Böer and Saenger 2006). This annual species is a crop wild relative of indigo, Indigofera tinctoria (Kameswara Rao 2013).
Threats listed in assessment
Expansion of the existing roads within its known locality would likely have significant impacts on this species within the UAE. It is considered that this species may well be grazed.
History
This species is not known to occur anywhere else within the UAE, therefore it retains the same category and criteria as in 1996.

Within the UAE, Indiofera coerulea, records include Wadi Farfar (Jongbloed et al. 2003), the Ru'us al-Jibal (rare, single locality; Feulner 2011), Mezairaa (Jebel Ajman) and Wadi Nahawa (SSBH data), and WWNP (single record, ""Ghara tributary of Powerline Fork""; Feulner 2016). In montane environments, it is generally found at lower altitudes (Mahmoud et al. 2018). It is described as widespread within suitable wadi and mountain habitats (MEW 2010), and D. Aplin (pers. comm. 2020) found the species at Madhab (Fujairah). The distribution map is certainly incomplete. In terms of appearance, habitat and ecology, this species is described as being quite similar to Indigofera colutea (Jongbloed et al. 2003). It has woody stems and grows to moderate heights (around 50 cm) in addition to producing flowers between January and July (Jongbloed et al. 2003). Differing to I. colutea, it has a silvery aspect, however it also exhibits a perennial life cycle (Jongbloed et al. 2003). This species is found growing on sand plains, sand dunes and along roadsides, in addition to favouring gravel wadi beds (Jongbloed et al. 2003). I. argentea is a crop wild relative of indigo, I. tinctoria (Kameswara Rao 2013).
Threats listed in assessment
This species is known to be affected by grazing, as it is more often seen in areas with lower grazing pressure. Coastal populations are likely to have been impacted by development.
