This species is native to the northern Hajar Mountains (Fujairah and Ras al-Khaimah emirates) north of Dibba and Masafi, where it is an uncommon resident (Pedersen et al. 2017). It was first recorded in the UAE in Fujairah in April 1987 (Pedersen et al. 2017). Birds outside of the Hajar Mountains are of feral origin and likely not self-sustaining: In 2012, 500 birds were released near Al Ain on Jebel Hafeet (Abu Dhabi Emirate); further releases took place on Jebel Buhays and Qarn Nizwa (Sharjah Emirate) as well as on several islands in the Arabian Gulf (Das, Sir Bani Yas, Marawa, Abu al-Abyad) (Jennings 2010, Pedersen et al. 2017).

This species occurs on arid and semi-arid rocky slopes and hillsides with low vegetation cover and occasional stunted trees and bushes (Watson 1962, Papaevangelou 1980, Jennings 2010, Aspinall and Porter 2011). It is found mainly between 500 and 1,500 m, but ranges down to 200 m during foraging trips, when it also occurs on agricultural land (Pantelis 1980, Papaevangelou 1980, Serez 1992, Khan et al. 2009, Aspinall and Porter 2011). There is little known about the diet of the species in the UAE, but individuals in Musandam (Oman) have been observed feeding on berries (Jennings 2010). Elsewhere in the Middle East, the species also takes seeds of grasses and weeds, leaves and insects (Jennings 2010). Availability of water influences population density, even though birds will move up to 10 km to access water (Watson 1962), and likely limits a range expansion in eastern Arabia (Jennings 2010). There is no information available on the breeding behaviour of the species in the UAE. In Musandam (Oman), nests were made of twigs and placed in shallow depressions on gravelly ground, hidden under bushes at the edge of cultivated or grassy fields (Jennings 2010). These nests contained eggs in February and March, while juveniles were recorded in June (Jennings 2010). It is unclear if there is competition for feeding sources and nesting sites with Sand Partridge Ammoperdix heyi (Jennings 2010).

This species occurs in arid environments on desolate rocky and stony hillsides, in wadis and cliffs (Jennings 2010, Aspinall and Porter 2011). It requires some vegetation cover and is thus rarely found in sandy places (Jennings 2010). While it is able to persist without water for long periods, it readily visits water sources when available, where flocks of up to 70 individuals may congregate (Jennings 2010). During the hottest time of the day, it hides in shady places under rocks and vegetation, and is only active around sunrise and sunset (Jennings 2010). The species is intolerant of any disturbance and very shy; thus it generally avoids proximity to humans and only occasionally visits open, cultivated landscapes for foraging (Jennings 2010). It feeds mainly on insects, but may also take leaves, fruits and even human food scraps (Jennings 2010). There is not much known about its breeding biology. In spring, males occupy and aggressively defend territories, and pairs are forming (Jennings 2010). It is assumed that nests are hidden in rock crevices, and clutches contain up to 15 eggs (Jennings 2010). While in central Arabia, adults with chicks have mostly been observed from March to July, records of small chicks from Oman in August suggest that also the population in the UAE might breed fairly late (Jennings 2010). It is likely that males and females raise separate broods (Jennings 2010).
Threats listed in assessment
Recreation within the species's occupied range could have an impact, reducing local numbers and potentially leading to individuals altering their behavioural patterns (Aspinall 1996), but in UAE the degree of impact on the species as a whole is thought to be negligible due to how inaccessible its habitat is (Aspinall 1996, Khan;et al.;2009). However, its habitat is becoming more accessible, with development leading to habitat loss and fragmentation. A potential threat to the species, which should not be allowed to occur in the future, is the introduction of See-see Partridge, Ammoperdix griseogularis, into the native range of Sand Partridge, due to the risk of hybridisation (Aspinall 1996), while introduction of Arabian Partridge and Chukar within Sand Partridge's range may be leading to increased competition over resources, and the risk of introduced diseases.

Assessment rationale/justification
The Reticulate Whipray occurs throughout UAE coastal waters. This species is not targeted or valued in markets of the UAE, trawling has been banned there since 1980 and recently conducted surveys indicate it remains common in the area; however, Himantura species are discarded from catches in the UAE and it is unknown how this impacts the species. A large part of the species distribution in the Arabian Sea region (namely, India and Pakistan) is under extremely intense and increasing demersal fishing pressure. In contrast, Himantura species are regularly discarded in the Arabian Gulf and Sea of Oman, and they remain common there. Though data specifically from the UAE are not available, individuals in the UAE are a component of a larger, interconnected and migratory population that occurs broadly in the north-western Indian Ocean. Given the intense fishing pressures faced by this species in other parts of the broader Arabian Seas region, and ongoing threats from discard and habitat loss in the UAE, it is inferred that declines reported in the Arabian Seas are representative of the status in the UAE. Based on recorded levels of exploitation and decline in habitat quality, it is suspected to have declined by at least 30% over the past three generation lengths, or about 60 years. It is listed as Vulnerable A2cd.

The Reticulate Whipray is often found near sandy beaches, in sandy areas of coral reefs, in shallow estuaries and lagoons, and may even enter freshwater (Vaudo and Heithaus 2009, Gutteridge 2012). This species also occurs offshore to depths of at least 50 m (White et al. 2006). Tracking data for the Reticulate Whipray suggests that within sandy, shallow water areas, the species is a highly resident mesopredator, though the home range for individuals can be relatively restricted (Vaudo and Heithaus 2012). Himanura species exhibit a strong association with shallow waters of the western region where complex habitats such as coral assemblages and seagrass beds are most prevalent (Last et al. 2016 Rays of the World book). Its reproductive mode is viviparous with histotrophy. This species reaches 160 cm disc width (DW) (Last and Stevens 2009). Males mature at 82-84 cm DW and size at birth is 21-28 cm DW (Manjaji 2004, White et al. 2006, White and Dharmadi 2007). Fecundity is assumed to be low, as a single pregnant female observed possessed two embryos (B.M. Manjaji-Matsumoto pers. obs.).As there is no information on this species' maximum age and age at maturity, generation length was inferred as 20 years based on data for the congener, the Blackspotted Whipray (Himantura astra). Female Blackspotted Whiprays are reported to have a maximum age of 29 years and an age at maturity of nine years (Jacobsen and Bennett 2011). These were used to calculate a generation length of 19 years based on the equation: generation length = (((29-9)/2)+9). The maximum size of the Reticulate Whipray is considerably larger (~160 cm DW) than that of the Blackspotted Whipray (80 cm DW), so it is possible the generation length of the Reticulate Whipray is greater than 20 years.

Information pertaining to threats specific to the UAE are unavailable. This species is impacted by bycatch fisheries that are active elsewhere in its range. Marine habitats in the Gulf are experiencing high levels of disturbance and quickly deteriorating due to major impacts from development activities (including dredging and reclamation), desalination plants, industrial activities, habitat destruction through the removal of shallow productive areas and major shipping lanes (Sheppard et al. 2010). Corals in the UAE and Arabian Gulf have severely declined due to the increasing frequency of mass bleaching events caused by rising water temperatures, which is a consequence of climate change, as well as pervasive coastal development (Riegl et al. 2018, Burt et al. 2019).

This inshore eagle ray occurs throughout UAE waters, but little is known on its population there. It may be taken as bycatch in inshore gillnet fisheries. Most of the distribution of the species in the Arabian Sea region is under extremely intense and increasing demersal fishing pressure, especially off India. Furthermore, the loss and modification of coastal habitats in the Arabian Gulf is a significant concern, especially since this species is known to rely on estuaries during part of its life history. Its relative rarity, large size, and low productivity makes this species particularly susceptible to population decline. Though data specifically from the UAE are not available, individuals in the UAE are a component of a larger, interconnected and migratory population that occurs broadly in the north-western Indian Ocean. Given the intense fishing pressures faced by this species throughout the Arabian Seas, and ongoing threats from bycatch and habitat loss, it is inferred that declines reported in the Arabian Seas are representative of the status in the UAE. Based on recorded levels of exploitation, it is suspected to have declined by at least 50% over the past three generation lengths, or about 45 years. It is listed as Endangered A2d.

The Longhead Eagle Ray occurs primarily inshore on the inner continental shelf, and is associated with estuarine habitats (Last et al. 2016), especially where it occurs in the Arabian Gulf (Bishop et al. 2016). It attains a maximum size of 90 cm disc width (DW) with males mature at 50 cm DW and females at 75 cm DW (White and Moore 2013). Size at birth is unknown but the smallest free-swimming individual examined was 23 cm DW. Little else is known of the biology of this species. However, it is suspected to exhibit low fecundity as with other myliobatids which bear litters of up to four offspring (Compagno and Last 1999). As there is no information on this species' maximum age and age at maturity, generation length was inferred as ~15 years based on data for the Bat Ray (Myliobatis californicus) which are reported to have a maximum age of 24 years and an age at maturity of five years (Martin and Cailliet 1988). However, it is noted that the Longhead Eagle Ray reaches a smaller maximum size than this species.

The Spadenose Shark occurs in UAE waters on the Sea of Oman, but is very poorly known there. It is reported as a dominant species in landings in Pakistan and India and is particularly susceptible to inshore fisheries. Due to its limited fecundity, concern exists that ongoing increases in catches will lead to recruitment overfishing. Intensive and increasing fishing means that, like many other species, populations have likely declined. Little is known on the population of this species in UAE waters and given that its distribution there remains uncertain, it is listed as Data Deficient.

The Spadenose Shark occurs in UAE waters on the Sea of Oman coast, and potentially the Arabian Gulf coast. Its presence in the Arabian Gulf is unclear, but historic records suggest it may occur there (Wright et al. 1990). Extensive market and fishery surveys have failed to identify it there (Moore et al. 2012, Jabado et al. 2015). Globally, it is widespread in the Indo-West Pacific (Ebert et al. 2013).

The Spadenose Shark is common in coastal and estuarine waters, preferring muddy and sandy substrates at depths up to 80 m. It attains a maximum size of 91 cm total length (TL) and males mature at 24-36 cm TL and females at 33-35.8 cm TL (Devadoss 1979, Compagno et al. 2005, Sen et al. 2018). Breeding occurs throughout the year (Devadoss 1979) and females probably mate at least once each year. This shark is placentally viviparous, with arguably the most advanced reproductive mode of the elasmobranchs. Litter sizes range from 6-20, with a mean of 13 (Devadoss 1979). Young are born throughout the year, with size at birth around 12-15 cm TL, after a gestation period of five or six months (Compagno et al. 2005). Age and growth data are limited, but the generation length is estimated at about 3.75 years (Nair 1976, Compagno et al. 2005).

Recent revisions of the taxonomy of genus Mobula included the decision to consider the circumglobal Spinetail Devil Ray M. japanica (Müller & Henle, 1841) a junior synonym of the Mediterranean Giant Devil Ray M. mobular (Bonnaterre, 1788), causing M. mobular to become a circumglobal species (Poortvliet et al. 2015, Hosegood et al. 2018, White et al. 2018).Notarbartolo di Sciara et al. (2020) argued that one of the traits that were used to support the differentiation between the two species, the maximum size of M. mobular purportedly in excess of 5 m disc width (DW), can be explained by past misidentifications of M. birostris, and therefore unsubstantiated. This also supports their recommendation to retain for the species the common name Spinetail Devil Ray instead of Giant Devil Ray.

The Giant Devil Ray occurs throughout UAE waters. This species is not targeted or valued in markets of the UAE and capture of this species is totally banned in the UAE. It is a component of the bycatch in several fisheries, but much of this catch is unreported. It is directly targeted in Sri Lanka and India, and exported to international markets, especially China where the gill plates are highly-valued. Its low productivity causes it to be susceptible to rapid population declines. It is especially susceptible to exploitation (target and bycatch) in many largely unregulated gill net, longline and trawl fisheries that operate within its range outside and surrounding UAE waters. Some management measures are now in place in the Arabian Sea region, although domestic fisheries are likely to continue. Though data specifically from the UAE are not available, individuals in the UAE are a component of a larger, interconnected and migratory population that occurs broadly in the north-western Indian Ocean. It is inferred that declines reported in the Arabian Sea region are representative of its status in the UAE. There is no information to confirm that this species is breeding in the UAE and no information confirming the likelihood of a cease in immigration from outside the region, despite ongoing threats and recorded declines. Based on recorded levels of exploitation, it is suspected to have declined by 30-50% over the past three generation lengths, or about 60 years. It is listed as Vulnerable A2d.

The Giant Devil Ray is mostly oceanic, but is also known to occur in coastal waters (Last et al. 2016). This species reaches a maximum size 520 cm disc width (DW) with males mature around 198-205 cm DW and females around 236 cm DW (Weigmann 2016, Last et al. 2016). As is the case with other members of the genus, this species is livebearing and histotrophic, with embryonic nutrition supplied from a protein- and lipid-rich histotroph from highly developed trophonemata. A single, relatively large pup is produced per litter (Compagno and Last 1999, White et al. 2006b). Intrinsically, Manta and Mobula rays have among the lowest productivity of any chondrichthyan due to their large size, low fecundity, and late age at maturity (Pardo et al. 2016). Long resting periods may account for extended reproductive cycles in mobulid species. The generation length of this species is suspected to be around 20 years, based on the Reef Manta Ray (Manta alfredi), which reaches a similar size, is 25 years (Marshall et al. 2009).

This species is impacted by target (for fins and their valuable meat) and bycatch fisheries that are active elsewhere in its range. Manta rays are easy to target because of their large size, slow swimming speed, aggregation behaviour and predictable habitat use.

In UAE waters, the Oman Guitarfish occurs only in the Sea of Oman. It is a poorly-known, relatively recently described species with a global distribution that is apparently restricted to inshore waters of the Sea of Oman. A total ban on fishing for this species has been in place in the UAE since 2019. It has been taken in fisheries in the past at an unknown level. Little is known on its distribution, population, ecology and potential major threat from fishing; therefore, it is listed as Data Deficient in the UAE.

Little is known about this species' habitats, but it is presumed to occur over soft substrates. A male was mature at 50 cm total length (TL) and three adult females were 58-60 cm TL (Last et al. 2016a), indicating this is a small species. There are no reproductive or age data available. Generation length is inferred to be 5 years from the Lesser Guitarfish (Acroteriobatus annulatus) from southern Africa (Compagno et al. 1989).

The direct threats are unknown for this species, but similar species are known to be impacted by high levels of largely unmanaged and unreported mortality in target and bycatch fisheries.

Last et al. (2016a) placed Himantura heterurus, H. imbricata, H. javaensis, and H. walga within the new genus Brevitrygon, previously confused with other dwarf whiprays (Brevitrygon species) (Last et al. 2016b). There remains considerable taxonomic confusion over 'B. walga' with different forms across its range. These may turn out to represent a series of different species.

The Scaly Whipray occurs throughout UAE shallow waters, and can be common. Within the Arabian Sea region, it is regularly caught in shallow water trawls and is normally discarded at sea in the western part, but landed in considerable numbers in the eastern part (i.e., India). This species is not targeted or valued in markets of the UAE, trawling has been banned there since 1980, and recently conducted surveys indicate it remains common in the area. It is, however, discarded in large numbers and it is unknown how impactful this threat is to the species. It is especially susceptible to exploitation (target and bycatch) in many largely unregulated gill net, longline and trawl fisheries that operate within its range outside and surrounding UAE waters. Some management measures are now in place in the Arabian Sea region, although domestic fisheries are likely to continue. Though data specifically from the UAE are not available, individuals in the UAE are a component of a larger, interconnected and migratory population that occurs broadly in the north-western Indian Ocean. It is inferred that declines reported in the Arabian Sea region are representative of its status in the UAE. Based on recorded levels of exploitation and decline in habitat quality, it is suspected to have declined by 20-30% over the past three generation lengths, or about 33 years. The Scaly Whipray occurs throughout UAE waters. It is restricted to the Arabian Sea region, although its true distribution is unclear due to significant taxonomic issues, and research is urgently required to resolve this. Forms apparently consistent with the illustration in Last et al. (2016) appear to be present in eastern Iran waters of the Sea of Oman (F. Owfi unpub. data). However, specimens from the northern Arabian Gulf (hereafter referred to as the 'Gulf') (Kuwait and Iran; previously reported as Himantura imbricata) appear notably different (A.B.M. Moore unpub. data) and more consistent with the Bengal Whipray (Brevitrygon imbricata), a species that Last et al. (2016) report only from the Bay of Bengal region. Additional variation is evident in India. Until taxonomy is resolved, the forms are treated as a single species for the purposes of this assessment.

This species is very common in shallow and intertidal waters over soft substrates mostly to 30 m, but occasionally 40 m (K.V. Akhilesh pers. comm. 05/02/2017). It is a very small species, only growing to 32 cm disc width (DW). Data from the H. imbricata form show that males mature about 18 cm DW and females by at least 23 cm DW (Moore et al. 2012). It is born at 7-10 cm DW (Last et al. 2016). No data on litter size is available, but given the small size, it is likely to be low. Similarly, no data on frequency of breeding or on ageing are available. Generation length is estimated from the similar-sized Speckled Maskray (Neotrygon picta) from Australia that matures at 3-4 years and reaches a maximum age of 18 years, yielding a generation length of ~11 years (Jacobsen and Bennett 2010).

Marine habitats in the Gulf are experiencing high levels of disturbance and quickly deteriorating due to major impacts from development activities (including dredging and reclamation), desalination plants, industrial activities, habitat destruction through the removal of shallow productive areas and major shipping lanes (Sheppard et al. 2010).
